The wooden whaling ship "Charles W. Morgan" is the only remaining ship of her type and nowadays lies at anchor as a museum ship in Connecticut, USA. The ship that first went into service in 1841 in New Bedford, USA had covered many sea miles and caught more whales than any other whaler of her period. She returned from her maiden voyage after three and a half years laden with sufficient whale oil and bones to cover her building costs. During 80 years in service the Charles W. Morgan carried 21 captains on a total of 37 voyages lasting from 9 months to over 5 years. She was retired from service at the collapse of the American whaling industry in 1921.

The "Graf Zeppelin" was the one and only German aircraft carrier, however it was never completed or used. As the sole German vessel in this class it deserves a special place. On 16.11.1935 the German naval high command issued an order for it to be built by the "Deutsche Werke Kiel AG". It was to by crewed by a company of 1720 and carry 110 aircraft. Water displacement : 27,750 tonnes. It was launched on 8.12.1939. However by 1939 doubts had already arisen about its capabilities. In April 1940 construction work was halted and in July the "Graf Zeppelin" was towed to Gotenhafen and following a general stoppage of shipbuilding in April 1943 it was taken to Stettin. On 25.4.1945 the G.Z. was sunk at its berth by a demolition squad, however in March 1947, it was raised by the Soviet navy and later that June it was finally sunk by torpedos

The Duke of York, one of the five King George V battle ships, was launched on 28.02.1940 and completed on 2.11.1941. Her first mission was to take Prime Minister Churchill to the USA. The ship was used in European waters throughout the war, mostly as a protection vessel for the convoys bound for Murmansk. Launched by the US navy in 1989, the U.S.S. WASP (LHD-1) is the first ship of the new class of multipurpose amphibious assault ships. Seven more vessels of the WASP class followed up to 2009. These ships, relaying the old Tarawa Class, can carry up to 40 helicopters and V/STOL (vertical/short takeoff and landing) aircraft as well as up to 1.894 marines. Furthermore, this "floating dock" arries several landing crafts to bring vehicles and personal to the landing beach. The main mission of these units is supporting the landing operations of the US Navy. But they can also be used for humanitarian or rescue operations. The U.S.S. Wasp is fitted with a continuous, 257.2 m long, flight deck. Maximum speed 20 knots. Crew: 104 officers and 1.004 enlisted. Her medical facilities are capable of providing intensive medical assistance to 600 casualties, in four main and two emergency operating rooms. The U.S.S. Wasp model is composed of 1.349 parts ensuring a top quality reproduction. Photo etched components are included for the railings and for the radar equipment. The flight deck, in one piece, is a perfect fit to the hull. The vehicle hold, the aircraft hangar and the docking area are superbly represented. The Prince of Wales had an active but very short period in service with the Royal Navy. She was the second of five battleships in the King George V Class. She had a full load displacement of 40,990 tonnes with a top speed of 27.8 knots; armament: ten 356 mm cannon, sixteen 133 mm guns, forty eight 40 mm guns and numerous 20 mm weapons. The Prince of Wales was launched in February 1939 and completed on 4th March 1940. Together with the Hood, she was sent to hunt the Bismarck and the Prince Eugen before she was fully operational. After the loss of the Hood on 24th May 1941, when already seriously damaged the Prince of Wales fired on the Bismarck, hitting the target several times, and partly disabled it before turning away. Towards the end of 1941 she was ordered to Singapore. She was finally attacked and sunk by Japanese heavy aircraft in the seas off Malaysia on 10th December 1941.

The Borodino battleship is the lead ship among the 5 battleships of the Borodino Class, which had been intended to be the backbone of the Pacific Ocean Fleet. In the battle of Tsushima the Borodino, having superceded the wrecked Imperator Alexander III ship, led the battle group virtually until the end of the day. The commander maneuvered, attempting to cover the damaged flagship and carry out the Admirals order to lead the squadron for a breakthrough to Vladivostok.

The Tirpitz, 52,900 t, was in her time the largest and most up-to-date battleship in the world (apart from her sister ship the Bismarck). This 251 m long ship was launched on 1st April 1939 from the naval shipyards in Wilhelmshaven. but due to improvements and modifications had extensive technical and constructional differences from the sister ship. The newly designed heavy artillery shot projectiles weighting 800 kg up to a range of 36.2 km and could penetrate 350 mm armour at up to 21 km. After her first use in combat as the flagship of the Baltic Fleet in July 1941, in January 1942 she was moved to Norway in order to prevent an expected British invasion. From floating bases in the fjords she operated against British convoys carrying war supplies to the Soviet Union. But from September 1942 the Tirpitz was no longer operational due to substantial damage caused by an attack by 3 British mini-submarines of the X class. The Tirpitz was not seaworthy until March 1944. From April 1944 further damage was caused by numerous British air attacks, so that the Tirpitz was retired from service as a floating battery. Further British air attacks followed until finally, on 12th November 1944, the Tirpitz suffered 2 direct hits in an attack by 29 British bombers with heavy Tallboy bombs, following which she capsized between the islands of Haakoy and Grindoy - 890 men out of the crew of 2,608 survived.

One of the most famous vessels in maritime history is the HMS Bounty, a sailing ship that became known for the bold mutiny that took place on board. In 1787 Captain William Bligh was ordered by King George III to bring bread-fruit trees from Tahiti to the West Indies in the Bounty. Captain Bligh ruled with an iron hand and continually reduced the rations of his crew. On 28th April 1789 the famous mutiny occurred. Bligh and 18 of his henchmen were set adrift in a boat but, after a veriTABLE odyssey of a voyage, succeeded in making their way back to England. The rest of the crew decided to remain in the region and settled on Pitcairn Island, far from the shipping routes. To prevent discovery, the Bounty was ultimately burned by her former crew in 1790.

Knyaz Suvorov The battleship "Knyaz Suvorov" was laid down on September 8th 1901 in Saint Petersburg. Commissioned as part of the 2nd Pacific fleet it participated briefly in the famous Tsushima battle in May 1905. The battleship was the flagship of and commanded by vice admiral Z.P.Rozhestvensky. Almost at the very start of the battle the vessel suffered severe damage, a fire took hold and many ratings and officers were trapped and killed. The brave survivors continued to fight from the few undamaged guns but the ship was too badly damaged to be saved and the brave battleship "Knyaz Suvorov" was eventually sunk after numerous attacks by Japanese torpedo boats.

The Queen Mary 2 is the superlative passenger liner. The Queen Mary 2 continues the tradition of North Atlantic travel, thus perpetuating an era of ocean travel that was already claimed to have ended.

Most sailing ships achieved fame in seafaring history through sea battles, but some gained it through exploration. On 27th December 1831, H.M.S. Beagle, a brig built in 1817, sailed from Devenport, England on a five year expedition round the globe. At the invitation of the Captain and naturalist Robert Fitzroy, the young natural scientist Charles Darwin was also on board. The observations made by him during the voyage on the evolution of life and the origin of species formed the basis of the Darwin Theory, which made him one of the most important scientists of all time. This historic voyage went via Brazil, Chile, the Galapagos Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand and the Cape of Good Hope and back to England, where they arrived on 2.10.1836. Many species were brought back with them as specimens of their revolutionary findings.

The construction of new battleships and aircraft carriers capable of speeds over 30 knots also required modern new destroyers capable of up to 38 knots. By the end of 1940 orders for 100 ships of the future Fletcher Class were placed with 11 different shipyards. When the USA came into the war in December 1941, the navy placed a further 75 orders. The DD-445 USS Fletcher type called after Admiral Frank F. Fletcher was launched on 3rd May 1942 from Federal Shipbuilding in Kearny, New Jersey. Unlike previous US destroyers the hull of the ship was able to withstand much heavier loads, so that the destroyer driven by two high-pressure steam turbines with a capacity of 60,000 shp reached a top speed of 37 knots. The maximum cruising speed under operational conditions was 32 to 33 knots. Modern radar equipment ensured that she was also fully operational by night and in poor visibility. Some parts of the superstructure were clad in 12 mm hardened steel armour increased to as much as 19 mm armour plating in vital areas of the hull. Thanks to a very conservative construction, a powerful power plant and extensive modern radar and sensor systems, the ships of the Fletcher Class proved to be the most successful US Navy destroyers in the 2nd World War.

The 23rd. August 1958 saw the lunch of the Gorch Fock, the last of a series of four sister ships. Built at the Blohm&Voss yard in Hamburg, it was named after the poet and author Johann Kinau who had become known under the pen name of Gorch Fock. From the end of the eighth century AD, Vikings originating from Scandinavia regularly appeared in Great Britain and on the European mainland on raiding expeditions in their Longships. These highly sea worthy fighting ships of around 20 metres (66 feet) in length had a bow at both ends, enabling them to beach and/or launch in either direction. The shallow draught of only 1.5 metres (5 feet) also gave the Vikings the option of sailing or rowing up inland waterways and rivers, allowing them to raid areas deep in the hinterland. Unique green sails and over 100 years of history give this elegant sailing ship an unmistakable image. The hull of the bark Alexander von Humboldt was built in 1906 following the design of the sailing ship Bismarck and was first used as a floating light vessel named Reserve Sonderburg. In 1986 the ship renamed the Kiel was replaced by an modern lighthouse. At this time The Sail Training Association Germany was looking for a large sailing ship to work with young people and found the ideal basis in the Kiel with its windjammer hull. The Deutsche Stiftung Sail Training (German Sail Training Foundation) was set up and with financial assistance from the Beck & Co. brewery and a businessman in Bremen, the conversion to a bark was started. Under the auspices of the DSST the youth training windjammer was created with the aim of offering to young people from all over the world a school at sea and an unforgetTABLE learning experience. As an introduction to the North Sea Week in 1988 the Dream under 25 sails began with the naming of the vessel after Alexander von Humboldt the renowned German explorer and natural scientist. When cargo vessels come into harbour having covered thousands of sea miles, theystill have a difficult stretch ahead of them. The heavy cruiser Blücher was launched in Kiel on 8.6.1937 and went into service on 20.9.1939 as the type ship of the Admiral Hipper Class. With a maximum displacement of 18,700 tons and a length of 202.8 m, she carried a crew of approx. 1,380. Next to the Tirpitz the Bismarck, the flag-ship of the Germany Navy was the largest German warship with a displacement of 50,900 tons and a crew of 2092 men. Put into service on 24.08.1940, she left port on 18.05.1941 for operation Rhine Exercise. Together with the Prinz Eugen she was discovered early by British reconnaissance planes. In the encounter with the Hood on 24.05.1941 the latter was sunk by the Bismarck. After a long chase the Bismarck was hit by an aircraftfired torpedo on 26.05.1941 and intercepted by the British battleships King George V and Rodney. On 27.05.1941 the Bismarck was sunk by her own crew 490 km off the french coast.

In January 1937, when the keel for a new Royal Navy battleship was laid, a new vessel came into existence which with its concentration of 356 mm heavy artilleryin quadruple turrets took English shipbuilding in a totally new direction. In 1938, the ship was launched and named the King George V and in December 1940 she went into service as the first of five sister ships, to be followed in 1941 by the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York and in 1942 by the Anson and the Howe. In the following war years these ships formed the core of the battle fleet and were used in all theatres of war. The King George V had her baptism of fire duringthe pursuit and ultimate sinking of the Bismarck. She then served in the North Sea and the Mediterranean before going back to the shipyard in 1944. By the end of the war she had undertaken missions in the Pacific, often together with the US Navy. In 1958 the King George V was broken up.

The Titanic achieved fame due to the tragic events that overtook her during her maiden voyage on 14th April 1912. The Queen of the Sea was to carry 1,316 passengers from Southampton to New York for the White Star Line. During the night at about 23.40 hours, in the Atlantic, the British luxury linerhit an iceberg that tore a 100 m gash in her starboard side. Since the 12th century cogs had been used as merchant ships from the Baltic to the Mediterranean. Hundreds of ships sailed to England, Belgium, France and Portugal selling wine, wool, salt, oil, cloth, sub-tropical fruits, beer and silver. With Sweden, Denmark and Germany they traded in stockfish, wax, grain, wood, salt, tar, pitch, copper, furs and amber. The cog was of such great importance to the merchants that it became the synonym for the Hanseatic League. With the early cogs the advance was made from coaster to merchantman on the high seas. In addition to the four main trading ports of the Hanseatic League in Novgorod, Bruges, Bergen and London (in 1266 King Henry III gave the Hamburg traders the right to trade in London) many towns were established on the North Sea and the Baltic coasts and on navigable rivers to powerful Hanseatic cities. Thus in 1237 Elbing near Danzig became a permanent settlement. The main features of a Hanseatic cog dating from the 13th and 14th centuries are straight, slanting stem and stern posts, a single mast with square sail, a forecastle and stern gallery and a rudder fixed to the stern post. Cogs with a capacity of 100 to 200 tonnes were used both as merchant ships and warships. From the middle of the 14th century the first guns were used on ships, including in Northern Europe. Navigation was done by the sun, the stars and the sounding lead. At the end of the 14th century the cog was superseded by the hulk.

The Santa Maria was a typical merchant vessel of the 15th century. Except for Noahs ark, she is undoubtedly the best known ship in the world. On September 9, 1492 Christopher Columbus set sail from the Canaries in search of the westerly sea route to India - on a voyage that was to become one of the greatest voyages of discovery in history. He chose the Santa Maria as the flagship of his little fleet. With 100 tons and a crew of 52, she was the biggest of the three ships. After an arduous voyage, on 12 October, Columbus at last reached Watling Island in the Bahamas, believing it to be one of the islands which are set down in the maps at the end of the Orient. On a subsequent reconnaissance trip the Santa Maria ran aground off Haiti. Her wood was ultimately used for the construction of a fort.
