During the Second World War the USA raised five paratroop divisons of which the 82nd and the 101st were deployed most often as a prelute to mayor allied campaigns, like the invasion of Italy, Normandy and Holland. Yet the US paratroopers distinguished themselves also in purely defensive operations, as in the Ardennes for example.

To meet the many different demands made on the German armys pioneer force in the Second World War, it was necessary to form increasingly specialized tasks units, such as the landing pioneers, the tank and parachute unis. A special mention should also be made of the storm units which operated with the infantry to lead direct attacks on enemy strongholds.

The Turkish cavalry had both feudal troops (timariots) and foreign mercenaries, who each fought without a standardized set of armaments. Almost all of the Turkish cavalrymen used different types of small arms weapons: bows and crossbows, arquebuses and pistols.

The Supermarine Walrus was a single-engined amphibious biplane that was used by the Royal Navy from the mid 1930s. The Walrus was of robust construction to enable it to withstand both catapult take-offs and potential rough seas around the mother ship. This type was also used on aircraft carriers and was unique in that it was the first amphibious biplane with a retracTABLE undercarriage. Its main task with the Royal Navy was sea reconnaissance, but it could also be used for air/sea rescue and liaison purposes. Many crews that had been shot down owed their lives to the Walrus.

Simply known as the Connie, the four engined Super Constellation was one of the first transatlantic airliners of the post-war period. To meet the increasing demand for air transport across large distances in comfort, this extended version of the original Constellation could carry 71 passengers in First Class or 95 in Economy. The 500km/hr speed was markedly better performance than its main competitors could achieve at that time, and by using increasingly efficient engines and more fuel tanks, crossing the Atlantic and needing fewer stops whilst crossing the Pacific , enabled it to push forward the whole experience of passenger transportation.

The space shuttle developed by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA, is the only reusable space transport system in the world. It consists of the following components: the space shuttle (orbiter), with three reusable main engines, an external fuel tank and two solid fuel rockets with a lift-off thrust of 12.46 MN (1.270.566 kp). The space shuttle can take a payload of 24.5 tonnes and 7 astronauts simultaneously into a low earth orbit at an altitude between 200 and 650 km. In addition the shuttle is capable of docking with the ISS with the aid of docking adapters. Since the last Apollo flight in 1975, the Shuttle is the only possibility available to the USA of taking men into space using their own means. The first space shuttle launch into space took place on 12th April 1981 with the "Columbia". When further orbiters were completed after 1983, NASA considerably intensified their scientific experiments and strategic military activities together with the US Air Force. Communications and research satellites were transported into space, repairs were carried out in situ and the International Space Station, ISS, was built up and provisioned. The "Challenger" was launched into space for the first time on 4th April 1983. The "Discovery" followed on 30th August 1984. Since 3rd October 1985, the fourth space shuttle "Atlantis" has been used on 26 missions. The "Endeavour" was first launched on 7th May 1992. This shuttle was equipped with numerous new pieces of equipment and computers and therefore had much higher overall capacity. All other orbiters were gradually equipped with the new components. The orbiters can remain in space for a maximum of 28 days. The enormous structural and thermal loads on take-off and landing require continuous monitoring and maintenance of all components as well as improvements to the equipment. The heat shield on the front and under side of the space shuttle is particularly vulnerable and is inspected and repaired as necessary after each mission. In two tragic accidents in which the whole crews lost their lives, in 1986 the "Challenger" and in 2003 the "Columbia" were lost. After a two-year interruption and extensive modifications to the orbiters and the main tank, flights were resumed. Their most important successes include the launch of various space probes and the Hubble space telescope, the Magellan (Venus) and Galileo (Jupiter) probes, various flights with built-in laboratories, flights to the Russian Mir station and the International Space Station (ISS). The last space shuttle flight is scheduled for 2010. A new study by NASA indicates that consideration should be given to extending the space shuttle missions until 2015.

The MiG 3 was delivered to the Soviet Air Force in the spring of 1941 as an improved MiG-1. This high performance aircraft proved to be absolutely superior in high-altitude air combat with German aircraft. By the beginning of 1942, 3172 examples of this single-seater, designed as a fighter-interceptor for medium and high altitudes, had been built.

Apart from the harshness and rigours of the Russian winter it was especially the deployment of Siberian divisions which thwarted German plans to conquer Moskow by the end of 1941. In contrast with the German Army, the Siberian units benefited from special winter clothing and were trained to operate at low temperatures.

The strelets were the main forces of the Russian army up to the reforms of Peter the First. Strlets took part in all Russian military campaigns from XVI-XVIII century, and proved their superiority over the enemy while capturing Kazan, during the Livonian war, Asov campaigns, the war with Poland and during the first period of the Northern war.
