    KV-107-5 Helicopter development

    The prototype of the KV-107 series helicopter was designed with twin turbo-shaft
    engines and tandem rotor blades. Its first flight was on April 1958. US Army designed
    it YHC-A (later YCH-46C) and made evaluation tests with the intension of using it for
    troop transport but finally decided to terminate the program. It was later re-designated
    the V-107, upgrades were made including more powerful engines, and it made its
    initial flight on Oct. 25, 1960. In February 1961, the US Marine Corps selected the
    helicopter to serve as an assault landing mission heli, and designated it as the
    HRB-1 (later CH-46A).


    Service in Japan Self Defense Forces : KV-107 series helicopter :

    In Japan, Kawasaki Heavy Industry Company (KHI CO., LTD.) acquired a license to
    manufacture the helicopter, and launched Its first version of the heli in May, 1962.
    In Japan, Self Defense Forces, Maritime Self Defense Force, selected type KV-107-3
    as a mine sweeping mission heli and Ground Self Defense Force selected type
    KV-107-4 as an assault/transportation mission helicopter, finally Air self Defense
    Force selected type KV-107-5 as rescue mission helicopter, In 1967, Air Self
    Defense Force selected type KV-107-5, and received the first KHI manufactured
    KV-107-5 on November 21, 1967. Later deliveries of KV-107-5 helicopter were
    upgraded with more powerful CT58-IHI-140 engines (1,400shp each). These helis
    were re-designated as type KV-107A-5. 52 were delivered to the JASDF through
    1990. Recognizable features include twin steerable searchlights on both sides of
    the fuselage, bubble windows for search look-out, hoisting gears and two 500
    gallon Sponson type fuel tanks also on both sides of the fuselage. It was
    nicknamed the SHIRASAGI (White Heron). Now all KV-107-5 are out of
    commission and type KV-107A-5 is also being replaced with its successor, UH-60J.
